They usually have an open, light-filled character with a 'coreless' base matrix of clear or translucent coloured glass; and a layer of bands on the exterior. The clear base type are a classic Coreless Swirl while the translucent coloured base are known as 'Maypole' marbles (Baumann, 4th edition 'Collecting Antique Marbles').
