In 1964, founder Dave Rochlen was inspired by a Life magazine cover showing Russians looking comfortable at the beach in bathrobes. He purchased brightly colored floral fabrics and had his wife, Keanuenue, sew a short, baggy pair of pajamas with a sewn-up fly, cut off at the knee. Rochlen founded Surf Line Hawaii, Ltd. to sell the shorts. Following a massive June 1965 feature article in Life magazine showcasing Rochlen and his surfing friends wearing them at Mākaha, Hawaii, the brand exploded nationwide.
